Those of us with higher prescriptions have always been limited in the frames we are able to purchase due to our thick and heavy lenses. The bigger the frame, the thicker the lens. It can be frustrating being restricted to certain styles, especially when you want to keep up with the times, experiment and have fun with your style. One of the leading lens manufacturers of today, Shamir, has developed a new technology that everyone in the optical industry is talking about. Metaform has won numerous awards including Silmo 2022, The German Innovation Award 2022, and Elegido Producto Del Año 2022.
Metaform is a 1.74 index lens that is up to 40% thinner and lighter than conventional myopic ‘minus’ lenses. This lens has the most impact resistance that is 18x stronger than FDA requirements, and uses 90% less energy, water and chemical consumption than its predecessor. Shamir has loaded this lens with superior coatings, optical features and physical attributes through their nanostructure lens manufacturing process. This has allowed for a new way to coat lenses by rapidly fusing the Preform (an optical film paired with the coating structure) and cut the coating time down by 98% without losing quality.
The new coating process has also reduced Newton Rings (the “rings” that appear on the sides of thicker lenses) from the surface of the lens. The optical film that Shamir is using within the Metaform lens is the same film used in the automobile, aviation and even the space industry, including NASA.
