The Workshop:

Learn how to Handcraft an Acetate Frame

Imagine cruising around town in eyeglasses that YOU designed and made YOURSELF! You’ll never want to buy eyewear off the shelf again.

Immerse yourself in the art of eyewear design and the craft of framemaking: making a frame from scratch, by hand. You are creating something with your hands, feeling the material, working with it. There’s something so organic and natural about it and there’s great satisfaction in seeing something go from an idea in your mind to a frame that you get to wear. Your unique work, showcased on your unique face. Practical art.

  • August 17th, 18th, 19th (the enrollment deadline is July 19th)

We have room for 4 people maximum for each workshop - nice and small so it's more personal.

Why Attend?

See your idea turn into an actual piece for your personal eyewear collection. You’ll feel so proud to model a pair of handcrafted eyeglasses you made yourself. You will work through 23 steps required to hand make an acetate frame using old artisanal methods on frame designing, pattern making, filing, sanding, polishing, heat sinking hinges. Handcrafting eyewear is a skill that is rarely practiced anymore. Sara loves this quote from an Italian shoe maker: "The love of craft is rarely prioritized over the love of money. It survives, but there are very few shops that do this kind of work anymore. It’s become a lost art because it is difficult to do and can only be done with patience and passion.”

No experience necessary.

All materials, tools and equipment are provided. (Although after this course you’re totally gonna want to stock up on your own, so we’ve got a comprehensive tool list made up for you). All you need to bring is a camera, your frame design idea, and your curiosity!

Bonus value:

Bonus value for Opticians: if you think about it, the entire process is made up of smaller steps, and each one has a benefit on its own. You can extract many of the individual steps to help you with all kinds of repairs, modifications, (even selling!) in your daily work life.
